AB Effective from January 1, 1993, the US Centre for Disease Control (CDC),
expanded the AIDS case definition to include all adults and adolescents
infected with HIV with either an absolute number of peripheral CD4+ T
cells < 200/microliters or percent CD4+ T cells < 14, or both. Applying
the revised AIDS case definition, our data demonstrate an increase in
the proportion of HIV infected individuals classified as having AIDS,
and in many instances, a significant reduction in the time to an AIDS
diagnosis. Using a relatively small control population we have also
attempted to quantify the variation inherent in measurement of CD4+ T
cell values within peripheral blood, to highlight the implications for
the laboratory should the revised AIDS case definition be adopted in
Australia.
